First let me start by saying I am not a writer. I’m an enthusiast who, through this great recession, has had the opportunity to fall in love with motorcycling again.

Being in the power sports business for quite a few years now and my obsessive personality has allowed me to ride and own many motorcycles. Almost all major brands and styles have been in my paddock. I have been endlessly searching for the next big thing, new technology, or just darn sexy lines. I’m only happy with the new steed for about a year until my eyes wander and spot some new model or style. I would see myself chasing Valentino on a Ducati 1098 or strapping my bear hunting equipment to an overpriced BMW GS and head off to Alaska. I would justify the money, commit to the trade, and leave the dealership with my new companion and mission in life only to realize my humble limitations and start looking for something else. Well, this was quite a bit easier to do when income was a little more disposable and my children ate less. Changes came quickly and yours truly found himself without a bike for about two years. I know- how could he possibly survive?

It was time to rethink the importance of life, relationships, and money. It was a time for me to learn to be content with much less. Once this valuable lesson was learned, I borrowed a pre-owned Kawasaki KLR 650 from the shop for the night. I was just taking it home and found myself heading the complete opposite direction. Up the coast I went with the biggest grin in years. My 15 minute commute became 2 hours. For the return to work, I got up about an hour early and took the long way. Thinking about how much fun I was having on a bike that I probably would never have owned and how I was going to be a little bummed when I arrived at work and turned in the keys. It just so happened that there was another KLR on our showroom floor with low miles and price that would perfectly fit in my new budget. This was the most practical motorcycle and fun motorcycle I have ever owned. Maybe it was because I missed motorcycling more than motorcycles.

My KLR is a great motorcycle. You can pick up a new one for about 6299.00 and spend anywhere from 2 to 5 grand on a nice “experienced” model. It’s inexpensive to own and operate, It has a multitude of accessory options, and It’s super easy to ride solo or “Two-up” with your special someone. As of yet, I have not made to Alaska for bear hunting but I have made it Arizona for lunch (it’s the only Cracker Barrel around, you know). I have not traveled the States but have made the run to San Francisco for pizza. I have strapped my tent, chairs, cooler, clothes, fishing rods, and other junk to the bike with no real concern about scratched plastics. I’ve crashed it the dirt with no major issues and had no problem picking the bike up without help. I’ve ridden dirt, street, and trails; enjoyed sunny San Diego days and rainy Nor- Cal nights. I’ve filled up the six gallon tank and just rode with no particular place to go.

So…. With all this said, I thank God for allowing me to learn a great lesson and thank the dude who traded in his KLR. Without which I would not be writing this today. And this time I have no visions of battling the boys of the MotoGP or tying that record bison to my rear rack. But let me finish with this one thought- when the Great Virus hits, and the zombies attack- Steve-o and his KLR will be ready.

Safety Note:
Riding a motorcycle is a fun sport. That is why we do it. It also has some risks and managing those risks is a key element for enjoying motorcycling. We all need to ride safely today, so we can ride another day as well. Some key elements to keep in mind for a safe ride:
Focus on the ride and avoid distractions.
Don’t ride when you are not stressed, rushed, angry, fatigued, sick, or on medication
Hydrate – keep the water and/or other fluids going in.
S.E.E. - Scan, Evaluate, and Execute: When you are riding, constantly scan the areas for cars, hazards and what can become problems. Evaluate how that will affect your ride. Plan for a safe solution to the hazard and be prepared to execute that plan. I like to try and predict what a car will do. And sometimes it’s an “OH Shoot – He did it” but I have an excape route planned to avoid the problem.

“I have been riding motorcycles for over 40 years, have even sold the Honda brand in the past. When I saw the Spyder advertised, it immediately caught me interest. At 64 years of age, it seemed to be what I was looking for to continue riding without fear of dropping a fully dressed cruiser. “My son bought a helmet on Saturday but it wasn’t fitting right. Although there is a “No return or exchange” policy we were told to speak to Lou Smith – Parts Director to see if it would be possible to exchange the helmet for a larger size. He took a look at the helmet and eventually approved the exchange for us. The exchange itself was handled by Bryan Everidge – Apparel dept and went very smoothly. Bryan even looked up a different finish of the helmet for us and got us an untouched version in the finish we really wanted, without us even asking. “My husband and I visited your store Saturday, October 4, 2008 with our son who is interested in purchasing a Honda CBR sport bike. We were greeted promptly by various sales staff and were eventually assited by Eddie. He was very friendly and knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions and give us great advice. We just came in for a look-see to get an idea of how much these types of bikes are and even though we weren’t ready to purchase at this time, Eddie was patient and didn’t “blow us off” since he wasn’t going to make a quick sale. He took the time to instruct our son on how to go about getting a license, what type of bike he recommends to a newbie, and how financing would work. We really appreciated the time and effort he spent with us and we WILL be coming back to him when our son is ready to purchase the Honda. We were also able to look at your huge selection of accessories and other bikes and were treated like family by all of your many salespeople. We were even invited to a bbq you were having by a nice blonde sales associate in the accessories department. Too often we hear about bad customer service. It’s nice to find a store that remembers what customer service is all about.”
